ADIZ stands for Air defense identification zone, an aviation abbreviation.
Designated airspace, often extending well beyond a country's territorial waters, in which aircraft must identify themselves, file flight plans and report positions to national authorities. The US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan all declare ADIZs.
Example: Russian bombers entered the Alaska ADIZ and were intercepted and escorted by US fighters.
Usage notes
ADIZs are not sovereign airspace under international law; they are unilateral reporting requirements. The US created them in the early 1950s. China's 2013 East China Sea ADIZ drew protests from Japan and the US because it overlapped existing zones. Pronounced "AY-diz."
