1. American English
Writing & Everyday · Grammar and Dictionary Abbreviations
Labels the variety of English used in the United States, especially in linguistics, language teaching and comparisons with British English. Learner materials use it to flag differences in spelling, vocabulary and pronunciation.
Example: AmE "sidewalk" corresponds to BrE "pavement," and AmE "elevator" to BrE "lift."
Variant labels include AE, AmEng and US English. Its standard spelling owes much to Noah Webster, whose 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language popularized forms like "color" and "center." Some features thought of as American, such as the participle "gotten," were once common in Britain too.
2. Aircraft maintenance engineer (AME)
Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations
Title for a licensed aircraft mechanic in Canada, Australia, the UK and many other countries, where the licence is often written LAME (licensed aircraft maintenance engineer). Licences are issued in categories, such as B1 for mechanical and B2 for avionics under EASA-style systems.
Example: The airline is recruiting a B1-licensed AME for night-shift line maintenance in Calgary.
Transport Canada issues AME licences with M (maintenance), E (avionics) and S (structures) categories. The US equivalent is the A&P mechanic certificate. Context separates the two meanings: medical exams for pilots in the US versus maintenance licensing elsewhere.
3. Aviation medical examiner (AME)
Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations
Physician designated by the FAA to perform pilot medical examinations and issue first-, second- and third-class medical certificates. Airline captains need a first-class medical, valid for 12 months under age 40 and 6 months from age 40.
Example: I booked my third-class physical with the AME at the airport clinic for next Tuesday.
Applicants first complete the FAA's MedXPress online form. Since BasicMed took effect in 2017, many private pilots fly without an FAA medical certificate by seeing any state-licensed physician every 48 months and completing an online course every 24 months. Other regulators use similar examiners, such as EASA's aeromedical examiners (AMEs).
4. African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME)
Religion · Religious Term Abbreviations
First independent Protestant denomination founded by Black Americans, established in 1816 by Richard Allen and other leaders in Philadelphia after discrimination in white Methodist churches. Mother Bethel AME Church in Philadelphia stands on the oldest land continuously owned by Black Americans.
Example: The governor spoke at the AME church's anniversary service.
The church grew rapidly after the Civil War and founded colleges such as Wilberforce University. Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, where nine worshipers were murdered in 2015, is one of its historic congregations. The related AME Zion Church is a separate denomination.
