AIRMET stands for Airmen's Meteorological Information, an aviation abbreviation.

In-flight weather advisory for hazards most significant to small aircraft: moderate icing, moderate turbulence, sustained surface winds over 30 knots, widespread IFR conditions and mountain obscuration. US AIRMETs are issued every six hours and named Sierra, Tango and Zulu by hazard type.

Example: An AIRMET Zulu for moderate icing between 6,000 and 14,000 feet made the trip in the unprotected Piper a no-go.

Usage notes

Sierra covers IFR conditions and mountain obscuration, Tango covers turbulence, strong surface winds and low-level wind shear, and Zulu covers icing and freezing levels. The US now publishes them graphically as G-AIRMETs. Less severe than a SIGMET, an AIRMET still matters for training aircraft that lack deicing equipment or weather radar.
