ERAS stands for Enhanced recovery after surgery, a surgical abbreviation.
Evidence-based perioperative care pathways that reduce surgical stress and speed recovery by combining patient education, carbohydrate drinks instead of prolonged fasting, opioid-sparing multimodal analgesia, goal-directed fluids, early feeding and early mobilization. Pathways exist for colorectal, gynecologic, orthopedic, cardiac and many other operations.
Example: ERAS pathway: clear carb drink 2 hours pre-op, TAP block, walking the evening of surgery.
Usage notes
The concept was pioneered by Danish surgeon Henrik Kehlet in the 1990s, and the ERAS Society, founded in 2010, publishes procedure-specific guidelines. Shorter hospital stays and fewer complications are seen when compliance with the pathway elements is high. Also known as fast-track surgery.
