504 plan stands for Section 504 plan, a K-12 education abbreviation.
Plan that provides accommodations to a student with a disability under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, such as extra test time, preferential seating, insulin access or allergy procedures. It covers students whose impairment substantially limits a major life activity, a broader group than those eligible for an IEP.
Example: Her 504 plan allows her to check her blood sugar and eat snacks in class.
Usage notes
A 504 plan provides access and accommodations but not specially designed instruction, which requires an IEP. The law applies to every institution receiving federal funds, including colleges, and is enforced by the Office for Civil Rights. Common qualifying conditions include ADHD, diabetes, anxiety and severe food allergies.
