1. Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition

Law & Legal · Criminal Law Abbreviations

Pennsylvania pretrial diversion program for first-time offenders charged with less serious crimes, including many first DUI cases. Defendants who complete probation-like conditions have their charges dismissed and can seek expungement of the arrest record.

Example: The district attorney accepted him into ARD, so the DUI will be dismissed after six months of supervision.

Admission is at the district attorney's discretion and requires court approval. In DUI cases ARD usually brings a shorter license suspension than a conviction. Pennsylvania appellate courts have disagreed over whether accepting ARD may count as a prior offense when sentencing a later DUI.

2. Arbeitsgemeinschaft der öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten der Bundesrepublik Deutschland

Organizations & Companies · Media and Broadcasting Abbreviations

Joint organization of Germany's regional public broadcasters, which together run the national TV channel Das Erste, the Tagesschau news and many radio stations.

Example: The Tagesschau on ARD is Germany's most-watched news program.

Founded in 1950 by the regional broadcasters of West Germany. The long name means "Working Group of the Public Broadcasting Institutions of the Federal Republic of Germany". Tagesschau has aired since 1952. Its crime series Tatort has run since 1970.

Example: The ARD meeting is scheduled for 3:30 on Tuesday with the diagnostician and speech therapist.

Texas parents usually say "ARD meeting" rather than "IEP meeting". An annual ARD reviews the IEP, and dismissal ARDs end special education services. The Texas Education Agency publishes a parent guide to the ARD process.
