3PMSF stands for Three-peak mountain snowflake, an automotive abbreviation.
Symbol of a snowflake inside a three-peaked mountain, molded on tires that have passed a standardized snow traction test showing at least 10 percent better acceleration traction than a reference tire. 3PMSF marks dedicated winter tires and some all-weather tires.
Example: Quebec requires tires with the 3PMSF symbol on passenger cars from December to March.
Usage notes
The test procedure is defined by ASTM and recognized by the US, Canada and the EU. Quebec has required winter tires since 2008, and the symbol is the legal standard. Unlike M+S, the marking reflects measured performance on snow.
