ASTM designations such as A36 steel, C150 cement and D638 plastic tensile tests appear throughout engineering specifications.
Example: Concrete cylinders were tested for compressive strength according to ASTM C39.
Usage notes
Chemist Charles Dudley founded the society to address rail failures with standard specifications for steel rails. It renamed itself ASTM International in 2001. Letter prefixes group standards by topic: A for ferrous metals, B nonferrous, C ceramics and concrete, D other materials such as plastics, and so on.
