CategoriesTransportation & Travel

2WD stands for Two-wheel drive, an automotive abbreviation.

Description used in pickup truck and SUV listings for versions that drive only two wheels, usually the rear on trucks and the front on crossovers. 2WD models are cheaper, lighter and slightly more fuel-efficient than their 4WD equivalents.

Example: The 2WD F-150 is $4,000 cheaper, but resale value is higher for 4x4 trucks in snow states.

Usage notes

Truck makers often write 4x2 for the same thing. Buyers in warm climates who never go off-road often choose 2WD to save money and fuel. Adding weight in the bed improves traction for rear-drive pickups in snow, a traditional winter trick.
