CW5 stands for Chief Warrant Officer 5, a US Army rank abbreviation.
Highest Army warrant officer rank, pay grade W-5, whose insignia is a silver bar with a single black line running lengthwise. CW5s are master-level technical experts who advise general officers on their specialty and lead their warrant officer communities.
Example: CW5 Grant has flown Black Hawks for 28 years and now advises the aviation branch on training policy.
Usage notes
The grade was created by the Warrant Officer Management Act of 1991, and the first Army CW5s were promoted in 1992. The Navy and Marine Corps write the grade CWO5. Only a small share of warrant officers reach CW5.
