ZnSO4 stands for Zinc sulfate, a drug abbreviation.
Zinc salt used to treat zinc deficiency, given orally or added to parenteral nutrition. ISMP lists the abbreviation as error-prone because ZnSO4 has been mistaken for morphine sulfate.
Example: ZnSO4 220 mg PO daily x 10 days was clarified as zinc sulfate, not morphine.
Usage notes
ISMP recommends writing "zinc sulfate". Zinc sulfate 220 mg contains about 50 mg of elemental zinc. Long-term high-dose zinc can cause copper deficiency with anemia and nerve damage. Zinc acetate rather than sulfate is the approved maintenance treatment for Wilson disease.
