4-MP stands for 4-Methylpyrazole (fomepizole), a drug abbreviation.
Antidote for ethylene glycol (antifreeze) and methanol poisoning. It blocks alcohol dehydrogenase, preventing the formation of the toxic acids that cause kidney failure and blindness.
Example: Suspected antifreeze ingestion: 4-MP 15 mg/kg IV load, nephrology consulted for dialysis.
Usage notes
Fomepizole (Antizol) replaced IV ethanol in most US hospitals because it does not cause intoxication or need frequent blood alcohol checks. It was approved for ethylene glycol poisoning in 1997 and methanol in 2000. Hemodialysis is still needed for severe acidosis or high toxic alcohol levels.
