YAG stands for YAG laser capsulotomy, an ophthalmology & ENT abbreviation.
Office laser procedure that uses a neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser to open a clear window in a clouded posterior lens capsule after cataract surgery, restoring vision within a day.
Example: YAG capsulotomy OS performed, 2.1 mJ x 28 shots; IOP check in 1 hour.
Usage notes
YAG names the laser crystal, so "YAG laser" is used for several procedures, including peripheral iridotomy. Capsulotomy usually takes a few minutes with only numbing drops. New floaters are common afterward, and retinal detachment is a rare risk. Pronounced "yag".
