XOF stands for West African CFA franc, a currency abbreviation.
Shared currency of eight West African states in the West African Economic and Monetary Union, including Senegal, Ivory Coast and Mali, issued by the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO). It is pegged to the euro at 655.957 francs per euro.
Example: The Dakar taxi fare was XOF 2,500.
Usage notes
The fixed rate, backed by a French Treasury guarantee, carried over from the franc's former peg to the French franc. In 2019 member states agreed to rename the currency the eco and stop depositing reserves in France, though the renaming has not yet happened. XOF and XAF have equal value but are not interchangeable.
