1. Well played
Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations
Compliment typed after a strong performance by a teammate or opponent, during or after a match. Common in shooters, MOBAs, card games and fighting games.
Example: Wp on that clutch, you saved the round.
Often combined as GGWP. Sincere "wp" is good sportsmanship, while "wp" after an opponent's lucky move can be sarcastic. In computing WP can refer to WordPress or word processing, which game chat makes irrelevant.
2. WordPress
Technology & Computing · Internet & Web Abbreviations
The open-source content management system behind a large share of websites, from blogs to news and e-commerce sites. Developers see "WP" in function names, plugin names, folders such as wp-content and the wp-admin dashboard address.
Example: Log in at /wp-admin, then update every plugin before installing the new WP theme.
Created by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little in 2003 as a fork of b2/cafelog. WordPress.org hosts the free software, while WordPress.com is a commercial hosting service run by Automattic. The software automatically corrects "Wordpress" to "WordPress" in posts, reflecting a long-standing insistence on the capital P. In other fields WP can mean the Washington Post or word processor.
3. White phosphorus
Military · Weapon and Military Equipment Abbreviations
Chemical that ignites on contact with air, used in munitions to create smoke screens, mark targets and set fires. Burning particles cause severe burns and are hard to extinguish.
Example: Mortar crews fired WP to screen the platoon's movement across the open field.
Use of white phosphorus as a smokescreen is legal, but use against people in civilian areas draws condemnation; incidents in Fallujah in 2004 and Gaza drew international criticism. Troops call it "Willie Pete," from the old phonetic alphabet. WP also means WordPress in web development.
4. Wild pitch
Sports · Baseball Abbreviations
Pitch so far off target that the catcher cannot handle it with ordinary effort, allowing a runner to advance. If the scorer judges the catcher should have caught it, the play is a passed ball (PB) instead.
Example: A two-out WP brought the go-ahead run home from third.
Wild pitches are charged to the pitcher and count toward earned runs; passed balls are charged to the catcher and do not. Knuckleball pitchers produce many wild pitches and passed balls. In box scores WP also marks the winning pitcher in some formats.
