1. World record
Sports · Other Sports Abbreviations · also used in texting
Best mark ever recorded in an event under official conditions and ratified by the sport's governing body, such as World Athletics or World Aquatics. Results show WR next to a record-breaking performance.
Example: Usain Bolt's 9.58 WR in the 100 meters has stood since 2009.
Ratification requires conditions such as legal wind (no more than 2.0 meters per second of tailwind in sprints) and drug testing. Swimming world records spiked in 2008-09 with polyurethane suits, which were banned from 2010. In American football WR means wide receiver.
2. Wide receiver
Sports · American Football Abbreviations
Pass-catching player who lines up near the sideline or in the slot, running routes to get open for the quarterback's throws. Top receivers lead the league in catches and yards and are among the best-paid non-quarterbacks in the game.
Example: The rookie WR caught nine passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns.
Receiver spots are often labeled X (split end, on the line), Z (flanker, off the line) and slot. Fantasy football ranks them as WR1, WR2 and WR3 by role. Receivers are also called wideouts. In track and swimming WR means world record, an entirely different meaning.
