1. Ampule
Medical · Pharmacy Abbreviations
Small sealed glass container holding a single dose of injectable drug; the neck is snapped open to withdraw the contents. In emergency departments "an amp" also loosely refers to a prefilled syringe, as in "an amp of D50" or "an amp of bicarb".
Example: Gave 1 amp D50 IV push for glucose of 38.
Also spelled ampoule or ampul. A filter needle is used to draw from glass ampules to keep tiny glass fragments out of the dose. Any leftover drug must be discarded because an opened ampule cannot be resealed. "Amp" also means ampere and is a common shortening of ampicillin.
2. Adenosine monophosphate (AMP)
Science & Engineering · Biology Abbreviations
Nucleotide with a single phosphate group, formed when ATP or ADP is broken down further and used as a building block of RNA. Rising AMP levels signal low energy and activate AMPK, an enzyme that switches cells toward energy-producing pathways; the diabetes drug metformin acts partly through it.
Example: Hard exercise raises muscle AMP, which activates AMPK and stimulates glucose uptake.
AMP is also called adenylic acid or adenylate. Its cyclic form, cAMP, is a separate signaling molecule. In other fields AMP is short for amplifier or ampere, entirely unrelated meanings.
3. Ampicillin
Medical · Drug Abbreviations
Clinical shorthand for ampicillin, an IV and oral penicillin used for enterococcal infections, Listeria meningitis and, with gentamicin, newborn sepsis. "Amp-sulbactam" refers to the combination sold as Unasyn.
Example: Neonate: amp 50 mg/kg IV q8h plus gent pending cultures.
Ampicillin was introduced in 1961 as one of the first broad-spectrum penicillins. Patients with infectious mononucleosis often develop a rash with ampicillin or amoxicillin, which is not usually a true allergy. "Amp" also means ampule and ampere, so the full drug name is safer in orders.
4. Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)
Technology & Computing · Internet & Web Abbreviations
An open-source framework launched by Google in 2015 for building fast mobile pages with restricted HTML and limited JavaScript, cached and served from Google's servers. AMP pages once received preferred placement in mobile search's Top Stories carousel.
Example: We dropped the AMP versions of our articles once Google stopped requiring them for Top Stories.
Publishers criticized AMP for keeping readers on Google-hosted URLs and giving Google control over page formats. In 2021 Google ended the AMP requirement for Top Stories and removed the AMP badge, after which many publishers abandoned it. The project moved to the OpenJS Foundation in 2019. AMP is also the everyday abbreviation for the ampere.
5. Amplified Bible (AMP)
Religion · Religious Term Abbreviations
English translation first published in 1965 by the Lockman Foundation and Zondervan that expands key words with bracketed alternatives and explanations to convey shades of meaning in the original languages. A thoroughly revised edition appeared in 2015.
Example: "Do not be anxious or worried about anything" opens Philippians 4:6 in the AMP.
Because the amplifications are interpretive, scholars caution against treating them as the text itself. A Classic Edition preserves the 1987 wording. AMP also abbreviates ampere in electronics.
