.edu stands for Education (top-level domain), an Internet & web abbreviation.
A sponsored top-level domain restricted to accredited post-secondary institutions in the United States, such as harvard.edu. Because eligibility is checked, a .edu address signals a genuine US college or university.
Example: Students can claim the software discount by signing up with their .edu email address.
Usage notes
Among the TLDs created in 1985, it has been administered by Educause under an agreement with the US Commerce Department since 2001. Institutions that registered before eligibility was tightened kept their names, so a few non-US holders exist. Universities in other countries usually use second-level domains such as .ac.uk or .edu.au.
