WinPE stands for Windows Preinstallation Environment, a computer abbreviation.
Lightweight version of Windows that boots from a USB drive, the network or a recovery partition to install, deploy or repair Windows. Setup media, imaging tools and many backup programs are built on it.
Example: Boot the server from the WinPE stick and run the imaging script.
Usage notes
WinPE runs entirely from memory and restarts automatically after 72 hours, which prevents its use as a general-purpose operating system. It is distributed as an add-on to the free Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK). Technicians often build custom WinPE drives with extra drivers and diagnostic utilities.
