Btrfs stands for B-tree file system, a computer abbreviation.
Copy-on-write Linux file system offering snapshots, checksums, transparent compression, subvolumes and multi-disk support. It is the default on Fedora Workstation and openSUSE and is used by many Synology NAS units.
Example: Before the upgrade, take a Btrfs snapshot so you can roll back if anything breaks.
Usage notes
Chris Mason began Btrfs at Oracle in 2007. Pronounced "butter F-S" or "better F-S". Its snapshot feature lets openSUSE and other systems undo failed updates by booting an earlier state. Its built-in RAID 5 and 6 modes have long carried warnings about data-loss risks, so most users rely on its single-disk, RAID 1 or RAID 10 modes.
