ACPI stands for Advanced Configuration and Power Interface, a computer abbreviation.
Open standard through which the operating system controls power management and hardware configuration: sleep, hibernation, battery status, fans, lid switches and power buttons. Its sleep states, such as S3 (suspend to RAM) and S4 (hibernate), appear in firmware menus.
Example: The laptop reports 0% battery because of a buggy ACPI table in the firmware.
Usage notes
Intel, Microsoft and Toshiba first published ACPI in 1996, replacing the older APM standard; the UEFI Forum now maintains it. Windows Device Manager lists many devices with ACPI in their names. Many newer laptops use Modern Standby (S0 low-power idle) instead of S3 sleep, which has drawn complaints about batteries draining in bags.
