Vref stands for Reference landing speed, an aviation abbreviation.
Speed at which an airliner crosses the runway threshold in landing configuration, at least 1.23 times the stall speed, with additives for gusty winds. Crews calculate it from the landing weight and flap setting before each arrival.
Example: Vref is 138 knots tonight; add five for the gusts and fly 143 on final.
Usage notes
Also written VREF. Light airplanes use a similar figure of about 1.3 times the stall speed in landing configuration. Flying well above Vref causes long landings and runway overruns, while flying below it risks a stall or hard landing. The planned approach speed, often called Vapp, is Vref plus the wind correction.
