VRAM stands for Video random-access memory, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Dedicated memory on a graphics card or GPU that stores textures, frame buffers, 3D models and, for AI work, model weights. Running out of VRAM causes stuttering in games and prevents large AI models from loading.
Example: With only 8 GB of VRAM, the card struggles with high-resolution textures in new games.
Usage notes
Today's VRAM is usually GDDR6, GDDR6X or GDDR7, while data-center GPUs use stacked HBM. The term originally named a specific dual-ported DRAM type of the 1980s and 1990s, but now means any graphics memory. Integrated graphics have no dedicated VRAM and borrow system RAM instead. Large language models are often chosen by how many fit in a given amount of VRAM.
