RAM stands for Random-access memory, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Fast, temporary working memory where a computer holds the programs and data it is actively using. Its contents are lost when power is switched off; more RAM lets a machine keep more apps and browser tabs open without slowing down.
Example: With 16 GB of RAM, I can edit photos with a dozen browser tabs open.
Usage notes
"Random access" means any location can be read in the same time, unlike tape, which must be wound to a position. RAM differs from storage: an SSD keeps files permanently, while RAM is cleared at shutdown. Phones and many laptops now have RAM soldered to the board, so it cannot be upgraded. Apple raised the base memory of all its Macs to 16 GB in 2024.
