CD-R stands for Compact Disc Recordable, a computer hardware abbreviation.

Blank compact disc that can be written once with a disc burner, storing up to about 700 MB of data or 80 minutes of audio. A dye layer is permanently changed by the burner's laser.

Example: I burned the wedding playlist onto a CD-R so it would play in Grandpa's car stereo.

Usage notes

CD-R was defined in Philips and Sony's Orange Book around 1990 and became affordable in the late 1990s, fueling the era of homemade mix CDs. Once a session is closed, the disc cannot be erased. Quality discs stored cool and dark can last decades, but cheap ones may fail within years. Most CD players and drives read them.
