2K stands for 2K resolution, a consumer electronics abbreviation.

Resolution about 2,000 pixels wide, defined in digital cinema as 2048 by 1080. Retailers often apply "2K" loosely to 2560-by-1440 monitors, which is technically inaccurate.

Example: The film was mastered as a 2K DCP for cinemas, then upscaled for the 4K release.

Usage notes

The Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) consortium of Hollywood studios set 2K and 4K projection standards in the 2000s. Many films, including visual-effects-heavy blockbusters, have been finished on a "2K digital intermediate" even when projected in 4K. Because the term is ambiguous in consumer products, checking the exact pixel count is wise.
