VHS stands for Video Home System, a consumer electronics abbreviation.
Consumer videotape format introduced by JVC in 1976 that dominated home video recording and movie rental for about two decades. Standard tapes held two to six hours depending on recording speed.
Example: Mom digitized our old VHS tapes before the magnetic tape degraded any further.
Usage notes
VHS beat Sony's Betamax in a famous format war, helped by longer recording times and JVC's broad licensing. Picture quality was modest, roughly 240 lines of horizontal resolution. Rental stores asked customers to "be kind, rewind". The last major Hollywood VHS release is often cited as A History of Violence in 2006. Tapes degrade over time, so digitizing preserves home videos.
