VAC stands for Vacuum-assisted closure, a nursing abbreviation.
Name widely used at the bedside for negative pressure wound therapy, taken from KCI's trademarked V.A.C. system. Nurses speak of a "wound VAC" for any suction-based dressing on surgical wounds, pressure injuries or traumatic wounds.
Example: Wound VAC alarming for leak; reinforced seal with transparent film, pressure restored.
Usage notes
Leaks are the most common alarm; they are fixed by patching the film or replacing the dressing. Single-use portable units are now used for closed surgical incisions. Because VAC is a brand-derived term, formal documentation and orders often use NPWT instead.
