UPJ stands for Ureteropelvic junction, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.
Junction where the renal pelvis narrows into the ureter, a common site of congenital obstruction and of kidney stone impaction. UPJ obstruction is a leading cause of hydronephrosis found on prenatal ultrasound.
Example: Prenatal hydronephrosis; MAG3 renal scan confirms UPJ obstruction, pyeloplasty recommended.
Usage notes
Pyeloplasty, which removes the narrowed segment and reconnects the ureter, cures most cases and is often done robotically. A crossing lower-pole blood vessel causes some adult presentations, with flank pain after drinking large volumes. Pronounced as letters.
