TRUS stands for Transrectal ultrasound, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.
Ultrasound performed with a probe inserted into the rectum to image the prostate, measure its volume and guide needle biopsies. For many years TRUS-guided biopsy was the standard way to diagnose prostate cancer.
Example: TRUS volume 48 mL; 12-core biopsy obtained under local anesthetic.
Usage notes
Transrectal biopsies carry a small risk of serious infection and sepsis, so many centers have switched to transperineal biopsy through the skin. Fusion biopsy overlays MRI images on real-time ultrasound to target suspicious areas. Pronounced "truss".
