1. Upper extremity
Medical · Anatomy Abbreviations
Clinical term for the arm from shoulder to hand, used in exam documentation, rehabilitation and imaging orders. Side-specific forms are RUE (right upper extremity), LUE (left upper extremity) and BUE (bilateral upper extremities).
Example: LUE swelling around the PICC site; UE venous duplex ordered.
Restrictions are often written by limb, for example "no BP or IV in LUE" after axillary lymph node removal or in an arm with a dialysis fistula. Upper extremity DVT is most often associated with central lines and pacemaker leads. Hand therapists specialize in UE rehabilitation.
2. Unforced error
Sports · Other Sports Abbreviations
Tennis statistic for a missed shot that the player had time and position to make, as opposed to errors forced by the opponent's shot. Comparing winners with unforced errors shows how cleanly someone played.
Example: She hit 41 winners against 18 UE in the final.
Whether an error is forced or unforced is a judgment made by statisticians courtside, so totals can vary. Broadcasts often show them as "UFE". Aggressive players may accept more unforced errors in exchange for more winners.
