1. Anterior cruciate ligament
Medical · Anatomy Abbreviations
Ligament inside the knee running from the femur to the front of the tibia, preventing the shin from sliding forward and controlling rotation. ACL tears usually happen during pivoting, cutting or landing in sports such as soccer, basketball and skiing, often with an audible pop and rapid swelling.
Example: Positive Lachman with a soft end point; MRI confirms a complete ACL tear.
Female athletes tear the ACL several times more often than male athletes in the same sports, and neuromuscular training programs lower the risk. Many active people undergo reconstruction with a tendon graft and return to sport after about nine months to a year, while less active people may do well with rehabilitation alone. The cruciate ligaments are named for crossing like an X.
2. Access control list
Technology & Computing · Cybersecurity Abbreviations
A list attached to a resource, such as a file, folder, network interface or storage bucket, that specifies which users, groups or traffic are allowed or denied and with what permissions. Routers and firewalls use ACLs to filter packets by address and port.
Example: Add a rule to the router's inbound ACL that blocks Telnet from the guest network.
File-system ACLs on Windows (NTFS) and Linux extend simple owner-group-other permissions. Network ACLs are evaluated in order, usually ending with an implicit "deny all". Public cloud storage buckets with permissive ACLs have caused many data leaks. In medicine ACL means the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee.
