CategoriesMedical

ATFL stands for Anterior talofibular ligament, an anatomy abbreviation.

Ligament on the outer ankle connecting the fibula to the talus, the weakest of the lateral ankle ligaments and the first to tear when the foot rolls inward (inversion sprain). It is involved in the large majority of ankle sprains.

Example: Tender over the ATFL, positive anterior drawer; grade II sprain, functional brace.

Usage notes

The calcaneofibular ligament is often injured next, and the posterior talofibular ligament rarely. The Ottawa ankle rules help decide which sprains need X-rays. Most sprains heal with early mobilization, but repeated sprains can lead to chronic instability requiring ligament repair (Brostrom procedure).
