1. Total cost of ownership

Business & Finance · Management & Strategy Abbreviations

Full cost of acquiring, operating and disposing of an asset over its life, including purchase price, installation, training, maintenance, energy, downtime and resale or disposal value. Comparing TCO rather than sticker price often changes which option is cheaper.

Example: Over five years, the electric vans have a lower TCO than diesel despite a higher purchase price.

Gartner popularized TCO analysis for IT purchases in the late 1980s. The method is now standard in fleet management, cloud-versus-on-premises decisions and procurement. A narrower measure, total cost of acquisition, stops at the point of purchase.

2. Tail call optimization

Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations

A compiler or interpreter optimization in which a function call made as the very last action of another function reuses the current stack frame instead of adding a new one, letting deep recursion run without a stack overflow.

Example: Scheme guarantees TCO, so this recursive loop can run a million times safely.

The Scheme standard requires proper tail calls, and many functional languages rely on them in place of loops. Python deliberately omits the optimization; Guido van Rossum argued it would hurt debugging by losing stack traces. JavaScript's ES2015 specification required proper tail calls, but Safari is the only major browser that implemented them. In business TCO means total cost of ownership.
