TOML stands for Tom's Obvious, Minimal Language, a programming abbreviation.
A configuration file format designed to be easy to read and to map unambiguously to a hash table, using sections in square brackets and key = value pairs. Rust's Cargo.toml and Python's pyproject.toml use it.
Example: Add the dependency under the [dependencies] table in Cargo.toml.
Usage notes
Created by Tom Preston-Werner, co-founder of GitHub, in 2013; version 1.0 arrived in 2021. It resembles INI files but has a formal specification with typed values such as dates and arrays. Python 3.11 added tomllib to its standard library for reading it.
