1. What's up?
Texting & Internet Slang · Texting and Chat Abbreviations
Casual greeting asking how someone is or what they are doing. It is the written form of the clipped spoken "'sup," common among teens and young men.
Example: Sup? Wanna play some Fortnite later tonight after dinner?
Budweiser's "Whassup?!" ad campaign of 1999 and 2000 made the spoken form a catchphrase. In sports SUP means stand-up paddleboarding. Very casual and unsuitable for professional greetings; "hi" or "hey" works better with colleagues.
2. Supremum (sup)
Units & Measurements · Math Abbreviations
The least upper bound of a set of real numbers: the smallest number greater than or equal to every element. The supremum of the open interval (0, 1) is 1, even though 1 is not in the set.
Example: sup{1 − 1/n : n ≥ 1} = 1, although no term equals 1.
The completeness axiom of the real numbers says every nonempty set that is bounded above has a supremum, a property the rationals lack. When the supremum belongs to the set, it equals the maximum. The sup norm of a function, its largest absolute value, is defined this way.
