1. Surface-mount technology
Science & Engineering · Electronics & Electrical Abbreviations
Method of building circuit boards by placing components directly on surface pads coated with solder paste and melting the paste in a reflow oven. SMT allows dense, compact, automated assembly and has largely replaced through-hole construction since the 1980s.
Example: The SMT line places 60,000 components per hour on the phone mainboards.
IBM pioneered surface-mount methods in the 1960s for computers, and the approach spread widely in the 1980s. Solder paste is applied through a laser-cut stencil. SMD names the components, while SMT names the technology, though the terms are often mixed.
2. Simultaneous multithreading
Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations
Technique that lets one physical processor core run two (or more) instruction streams, called threads, at once by sharing its execution resources. Operating systems see each thread as a logical processor, so an 8-core chip with SMT shows 16 threads.
Example: Disabling SMT reduced throughput slightly but cut latency spikes in the game.
SMT typically adds 10 to 30 percent throughput for parallel workloads, with no benefit for single-threaded tasks. Intel brands its version Hyper-Threading, and IBM's POWER processors run up to eight threads per core. Security flaws such as the 2018 L1TF (Foreshadow) and later MDS attacks led some cloud providers to restrict SMT. Intel dropped Hyper-Threading from its Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake chips in 2024.
3. Shrimati (Smt.)
Writing & Everyday · Title and Honorific Abbreviations
Indian honorific for a married woman, corresponding roughly to Mrs., used before her name in official documents, invitations, news reports and government communications.
Example: The ceremony was presided over by Smt. Lakshmi Iyer, Principal Secretary to the state government.
The male counterpart is Shri (also Sri or Sh.), used for any man much like Mr. Unmarried women are traditionally addressed as Kumari (Kum.). The Sanskrit word shri conveys auspiciousness and respect, and Shrimati is its feminine form. Government of India circulars routinely use both Shri and Smt.
4. Summit (Smt)
Geography & Places · Address Abbreviations
Highest point of a hill or mountain, used as a street name and in place names such as Summit, New Jersey; USPS abbreviates it SMT.
Example: The overlook at 1 Eagle Smt has views of three states.
Summit Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota, is known for its long row of Victorian mansions.
