STOL stands for Short takeoff and landing, an aviation abbreviation.
Capability of an aircraft to operate from very short runways thanks to high-lift wings, flaps, slats and ample power. Bush planes such as the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver and DHC-6 Twin Otter are classic STOL designs.
Example: In STOL competitions, modified Piper Cubs routinely take off and land in less than 100 feet.
Usage notes
Pronounced "STOLL." STOL aircraft are essential for bush flying in Alaska, northern Canada and Papua New Guinea, where strips are short, rough and often sloped. Military transports such as the C-130 Hercules have strong STOL performance for unprepared airfields.
