1. Singapore
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
City-state at the tip of the Malay Peninsula that became independent on August 9, 1965, after leaving Malaysia. SGP is the alpha-3 code, the Singapore dollar is SGD, and the country is a top global financial and shipping hub.
Example: Our SG data center serves customers across Southeast Asia.
Singapore has four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil. Changi Airport is frequently ranked the world's best. Locale tags include en-SG and zh-SG.
2. Solicitor General
Law & Legal · Court Abbreviations · also used in government
Official who represents a government before its highest court. The Solicitor General of the United States decides which cases the federal government appeals and argues for it before the Supreme Court, and most states now have their own solicitor general for appellate and Supreme Court litigation.
Example: The SG filed an amicus brief urging the justices to grant certiorari.
The office was created in 1870 along with the Department of Justice. Because the justices rely on its candor, the SG is nicknamed the "tenth justice", and the Court often issues a CVSG, a call for the views of the Solicitor General, before deciding whether to hear a case. Thurgood Marshall and Elena Kagan both held the post.
3. Surgeon General
Government & Politics · Political Abbreviations
Head of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and the federal government's leading spokesperson on public health, known for advisories and reports on issues such as smoking, obesity and youth mental health. The Surgeon General is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.
Example: The SG warned that social media poses a profound risk to adolescents' mental health.
The landmark 1964 Surgeon General's report linking smoking to lung cancer led to cigarette warning labels that still begin "Surgeon General's Warning". The position dates to 1871, when it was titled Supervising Surgeon of the Marine Hospital Service. Each military service branch also has its own surgeon general.
4. Shooting guard
Sports · Basketball Abbreviations
Backcourt player who lines up beside the point guard and is usually the team's best perimeter scorer, shooting from outside and attacking off screens. Also called the "2" or off guard.
Example: Their SG scored 31 points on 7-of-11 three-point shooting.
Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant are the most famous shooting guards. Modern lineups blur the line between the two guard spots, and many teams simply list "G" or "guard". The term "wing" covers shooting guards and small forwards together.
5. Specific gravity
Medical · Laboratory Test Abbreviations
Urine density compared with water, estimating how concentrated the urine is; typical values range from about 1.005 to 1.030. High readings suggest dehydration or substances such as glucose or contrast dye, while persistently low readings occur with excess fluid intake, diabetes insipidus or kidney damage.
Example: SG 1.032 and dark urine after the shift outdoors; push oral fluids.
Measured by dipstick or more accurately by refractometer. Urine that stays fixed near 1.010 regardless of hydration (isosthenuria) suggests the kidneys have lost concentrating ability. Urine osmolality is the more precise measure when concentration really matters, as in hyponatremia workups.
6. Seaborgium (Sg)
Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations
Seaborgium (atomic number 106) is a synthetic element in group 6, below tungsten, first made at Berkeley and Livermore in 1974. Only a few atoms exist at any time, but experiments showed that it forms compounds similar to those of molybdenum and tungsten.
Example: Researchers formed a volatile Sg oxychloride to compare it with tungsten's chemistry.
Albert Ghiorso's team reported element 106 in 1974 after bombarding californium-249 with oxygen-18 ions. It honors Glenn T. Seaborg, co-discoverer of ten transuranium elements, and was the first element named after a living person; the name was confirmed in 1997, two years before his death. Seaborg joked that he could receive mail addressed in element names: seaborgium, lawrencium, berkelium, californium, americium.
7. Singular (linguistic glossing) (sg)
Writing & Everyday · Grammar and Dictionary Abbreviations
Marks singular number in interlinear glosses, the word-by-word translations linguists place under example sentences. The Leipzig Glossing Rules standardize SG along with dozens of similar labels.
Example: The gloss reads "dog-SG bark-3SG," marking a singular noun and a third-person singular verb.
In glossing, grammatical labels are written in small capitals and attached to the translated morpheme with hyphens or periods, so 3SG means third-person singular. Other standard labels include PL (plural), DU (dual), PST (past) and NOM (nominative). The Leipzig rules are maintained by the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology and are used by most linguistics journals.
