Sur. Ct. stands for Surrogate's Court, a court abbreviation.
New York court that handles probate of wills, administration of estates, guardianships of minors' property and many adoptions. There is a Surrogate's Court in each of New York's 62 counties, presided over by an elected surrogate.
Example: The executor filed the probate petition in Kings County Sur. Ct. the week after the funeral.
Usage notes
The name comes from English church courts, in which a surrogate acted for the bishop in probate matters. Bluebook parenthetical: "(N.Y. Sur. Ct. 2019)"; practitioners also write "Surr. Ct." New Jersey has county surrogates who handle uncontested probate, though contested matters go to the Superior Court.
