SEVIS stands for Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, an academic abbreviation.
US Department of Homeland Security database that tracks international students and exchange visitors in F, M and J status, including enrollment, address, employment and program dates. Schools must report changes such as a student dropping below full time.
Example: Your SEVIS record must show active status before you can travel back to the US.
Usage notes
Mandated by a 1996 law and fully implemented after the September 11 attacks, it is run by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Applicants pay the I-901 SEVIS fee, currently $350 for F and M students and $220 for most J visitors, before visa interviews.
