1. Small for gestational age
Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations
Baby, or fetus, whose weight is below the 10th percentile for its gestational age. Some SGA babies are constitutionally small but healthy, while others are growth-restricted and at risk of low blood sugar, low temperature and later health problems.
Example: Term infant, birth weight 2,380 g, SGA; glucose checks per protocol.
SGA describes size, while growth restriction describes a failure to reach growth potential; the two overlap but are not identical. Percentile charts are used to classify newborns as SGA, AGA or LGA. In anesthesia SGA means supraglottic airway device.
2. Second-generation antipsychotic
Medical · Drug Class Abbreviations
"Atypical" antipsychotics, including risperidone, olanzapine, quetiapine, aripiprazole, ziprasidone, lurasidone and clozapine, used for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and as add-ons in depression. They cause fewer movement side effects than older agents.
Example: SGA olanzapine 10 mg nightly; baseline A1c, lipids, weight and waist.
Many SGAs cause weight gain, diabetes and high lipids, so metabolic monitoring is recommended at baseline and during treatment. Antipsychotics carry a boxed warning, first added for SGAs in 2005, about increased death in older adults with dementia-related psychosis. Clozapine is the most effective for treatment-resistant schizophrenia but requires blood count monitoring.
3. Supraglottic airway
Medical · Anesthesia Abbreviations
Category of airway devices that sit above the vocal cords to allow ventilation without entering the trachea, including laryngeal mask airways, the i-gel and laryngeal tubes. They are used for routine anesthesia and as rescue devices after failed intubation and in prehospital cardiac arrest.
Example: i-gel SGA placed after two failed intubation attempts; oxygenation restored.
Difficult airway algorithms from the Difficult Airway Society and the ASA recommend an SGA as the rescue step when intubation fails. The AIRWAYS-2 trial (2018) found an SGA-first strategy comparable to intubation for paramedic cardiac arrest care. In obstetrics SGA means small for gestational age.
4. Substantial gainful activity
Government & Politics · Public Program Abbreviations
Earnings threshold the Social Security Administration uses to decide whether a person is able to work for disability purposes: in 2025, monthly earnings above $1,620, or $2,700 for blind applicants, generally mean the person is not disabled.
Example: Because her part-time wages stayed below SGA, her SSDI benefits continued.
The limits are adjusted each year with national average wages. SSDI recipients can test their ability to work through a trial work period and extended period of eligibility without immediately losing benefits. SGA rules for SSI differ, because SSI counts income month by month.
5. Student Government Association
Education & Academia · Academic Abbreviations
Elected student body that represents students to the administration, allocates student activity fees to clubs and advocates on campus issues. Its officers usually include a president, vice president and senators elected by class or college.
Example: The SGA voted to fund a free shuttle to the grocery store.
Also called student government, student senate, ASUC at Berkeley or ASG at some schools. SGA presidents often sit on university committees or boards as nonvoting members. At community colleges and high schools, similar bodies go by student council.
