SBTi stands for Science Based Targets initiative, an environmental abbreviation.
Organization that defines and validates corporate greenhouse gas reduction targets as consistent with limiting warming to well below 2 °C or 1.5 °C. Thousands of companies have had targets approved, including many suppliers asked to join by large customers.
Example: The retailer's 2030 goal was validated by the SBTi as aligned with 1.5 °C.
Usage notes
Founded in 2015 by CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and WWF. Its net-zero standard requires companies to cut emissions deeply, typically by around 90%, before using carbon removals for the remainder. A 2024 debate over allowing carbon credits for supply-chain emissions caused internal controversy.
