1. Statutory Sick Pay

Government & Politics · UK Government Abbreviations · also used in business

Minimum amount UK employers must pay employees who are too ill to work, for up to 28 weeks. The weekly rate was 118.75 pounds in 2025-26, and it has traditionally been unpaid for the first three "waiting days".

Example: Our policy pays full salary for two weeks, then drops to SSP.

Employers may pay more under contractual sick pay schemes. Employees have needed to earn at least the lower earnings limit to qualify. Reforms in the Employment Rights Bill introduced in 2024 aimed to make SSP payable from the first day of sickness and to extend it to lower earners.

2. Shared Socioeconomic Pathway

Science & Engineering · Environmental Abbreviations

Set of five scenario narratives describing how global society, population, economic growth and technology might develop this century, from sustainability (SSP1) to fossil-fueled development (SSP5). Combined with forcing levels, they form the scenarios of the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report, such as SSP2-4.5.

Example: SSP2-4.5, a middle-of-the-road scenario, leads to roughly 2.7 °C of warming by 2100.

The full AR6 set includes SSP1-1.9, SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5; the second number is the radiative forcing in watts per square meter by 2100. SSP3 describes "regional rivalry," with high population growth and weak international cooperation.

3. Supply-side platform

Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations

Ad technology used by publishers and app developers to sell their ad inventory automatically, offering each impression to many buyers through auctions and setting price floors to maximize revenue.

Example: The publisher connected three SSPs to increase competition for its inventory.

Examples include Google Ad Manager, Magnite and PubMatic. In 2025 a US federal judge ruled that Google had illegally monopolized ad exchange and publisher ad server markets, a case centered on these systems. In UK employment, SSP means Statutory Sick Pay.
