PM10 stands for Particulate matter 10 micrometers or smaller, an environmental abbreviation.

Inhalable particles up to 10 micrometers across, including dust from roads, construction and farming, pollen, mold spores and sea salt, as well as the finer PM2.5 fraction. Coarse particles mostly lodge in the nose, throat and upper airways.

Example: Dust storms raised PM10 concentrations tenfold across the city on Tuesday.

Usage notes

The coarse fraction between 2.5 and 10 micrometers is sometimes called PM10-2.5. The WHO's 2021 annual guideline for PM10 is 15 micrograms per cubic meter. Many countries began regulating PM10 before shifting focus to the more harmful PM2.5.
