1. World Wide Fund for Nature
Organizations & Companies · Nonprofit Abbreviations
International conservation organization working on wildlife protection, habitats, climate and sustainable food and forestry in about 100 countries. Its international headquarters is in Gland, Switzerland, and its logo is a giant panda.
Example: WWF launched a campaign to protect the remaining habitat of the Amur tiger.
Founded in 1961 as the World Wildlife Fund, the name still used in the United States and Canada, it adopted World Wide Fund for Nature elsewhere in 1986. It started Earth Hour in Sydney in 2007. A legal dispute with the World Wrestling Federation led the wrestling company to rename itself WWE in 2002.
2. World Wrestling Federation
Sports · Sports League and Organization Abbreviations
Former name of WWE, used from 1979 to 2002, the era of Hulk Hogan's "Hulkamania" and the late-1990s "Attitude Era" with Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. The initials survive in classic match footage, vintage merchandise and older video game titles.
Example: My dad still calls it the WWF and swears WrestleMania III was the greatest show ever.
The World Wide Fund for Nature, which had registered the initials first, won a UK court case over a 1994 agreement limiting the wrestling company's use of "WWF", forcing the change to WWE in May 2002. For years afterward the old scratch logo was blurred in archive footage. Outside wrestling, WWF almost always means the conservation charity.
