SEC registration statement a company files to register securities for an initial public offering in the United States, containing the prospectus with business details, risk factors, financial statements and use of proceeds. The public filing of an S-1 is usually the first official sign of an upcoming IPO.
Example: The startup's S-1 shows revenue of $480 million and a net loss of $130 million last year.
Companies can submit draft registration statements confidentially for SEC review before filing publicly, a process expanded under the 2012 JOBS Act. Amendments are filed as S-1/A. Foreign companies use Form F-1, and established public companies often use the shorter Form S-3 for later offerings.
2. Personnel staff section

Battalion or brigade staff office that handles personnel matters: strength accounting, promotions, awards, evaluations, casualty reporting, leave and mail. The officer in charge is the S-1, usually a captain or lieutenant.
Example: Turn in your award packet to the S-1 by Friday.
The staff numbering system follows the same order at every level: S at battalion and brigade, G at division and above, J on joint staffs, N for Navy staffs and A for Air Force staffs. The system derives from the French army staff structure adopted by the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I.
