S-4 stands for Logistics staff section, a military term abbreviation.
Staff office responsible for supply, maintenance, transportation, fuel, ammunition and services for a battalion or brigade. The S-4 coordinates with support units to keep the formation equipped and moving.
Example: Ask the S-4 when the replacement tires will arrive.
Usage notes
The equivalent at division level is the G-4 and on joint staffs the J-4. Logistics officers in the S-4 work closely with the forward support company and the brigade support battalion. The section also manages property books and equipment accountability.
