S&P 500 stands for Standard & Poor's 500, a stock market & investing abbreviation.
Stock market index of about 500 of the largest US public companies, weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization and maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices. It covers roughly 80 percent of US equity market value and is the most common benchmark for US stocks and index funds.
Example: The S&P 500 closed at a record high, led by gains in semiconductor and bank stocks.
Usage notes
Introduced in its 500-stock form in 1957. It holds slightly more than 500 stocks because some companies have two share classes. Membership is chosen by a committee using criteria such as profitability, size and liquidity, not simply the 500 biggest firms. Funds tracking it, such as SPY and VOO, are among the largest investment funds in the world.
