S-3 stands for Operations staff section, a military term abbreviation.
Staff office that plans, coordinates and tracks operations and training for a battalion or brigade, publishing orders and running the operations center. The S-3 officer, usually a major, is among the most influential staff members.
Example: The S-3 published the training calendar for the next quarter.
Usage notes
The senior NCO is the operations sergeant major. At division level the function is the G-3, and on joint staffs the J-3. Serving as battalion S-3 is often considered a key developmental job for majors.
